The idea that the dance film would travel a screening route along the Dutch coast already existed. But it had to become more than that. A shared reflection on why we are even doing these kinds of projects in the first place. In my view, shared reflection and exchange around projects centred on our shared Dutch history of slavery is often presented and offered up too non-committally. A project passes through and is presented and carried out at location X. Participation happens by one's own choice and without obligation.
To take a somewhat different approach, and to avoid presenting the dance film in an entirely non-committal, generally accessible way, the idea arose to screen it, at location X in one of the places along the coastal route, inside a sea container. A sea container that you step into, where the doors close behind you, after which you find yourself in a fully darkened space with no points of reference and no comfortable seating. Until the film begins.
The dance film, screened in a sea container on its specific national and international screening route, connecting 4 continents through the content of the dance film, together form "Art Project Armazoen".
At each location, the container, with its content and context, is presented and represented by an art organisation or artist affiliated with the project. This partner must be familiar with the cultural background and environment of the audience, and develops their own programme based on the dance film and its content, through which they engage in dialogue with their audience.
The locations in the Netherlands where Art Project Armazoen is presented are: Vlissingen/Middelburg, Rotterdam, IJmuiden/Velsen, Den Helder and Amsterdam.
Internationally, Luanda/Angola, Willemstad/Curaçao, Paramaribo/Suriname and New York/US are visited.
