During the site-specific dance performance Buur(t)man, duet voor een individu, we followed a snapshot of a middle-aged Black man reflecting on his life so far.

Buur(t)man, who began to question his years of tireless, deeply felt attempts to adapt to and integrate into his environment, and the hope of being accepted and included within it, and began to scrutinise his dependence on his environment and its connection to his self-image. How much of his life has he spent creating and presenting an image of himself the way his environment likes to see him? Hours, days, months, years, decades... his entire life? And why did he attach so much value to this? Why did he never make the same effort to stand up for his 'real' self?

Fragments of a perceived confrontation with the dramatic contrast between Buur(t)man's personal expectations and (those of) his environment are what remain in the installation "Buur(t)man, een residu".
