A choreography created for the programme 'Nieuwlichters' by Het Nationale Ballet (Dutch National Ballet).

One of Monique Duurvoort's driving forces behind the creation of Phase was that she had a particularly strong need to show the 'established' dance circuit that the principle of being a 'professional' within the discipline of Dance is not something reserved solely for members of the well-known dance companies in the Netherlands — companies which, in her view, mainly represent the classical and modern dance field.

She therefore chose to work with 3 dance professionals from Het Nationale Ballet itself and 3 dance professionals from the Dutch hip-hop scene.

The first part is set to the composition 'Piano Phase' by Steve Reich. A particularly beautiful but very challenging piece for the dancers to follow, all the more so because Monique makes the movement run exactly parallel to the music.
The repetitive, tense and oppressive composition also underlies the context of the piece. The feeling of 'standing on the edge', of 'having had enough', or reaching the point where you 'draw the line' (for someone else), became the opening image of Phase. From there, the group of 6 dancers gradually comes together to move forward as one driving unit.

In the second part, set to 'Prelude for Meditation' by John Cage, the group ultimately falls apart into a surrealist image of 6 individuals moving and existing alongside one another. An image of one organic whole, in which all mutual connection has been let go.
